Oklahoma’s longest-running festival, in its 89th year, was scheduled for September 3-6, 2020. In March, festival staff made the decision to move Rooster Days to September due to the COVID-19 pandemic in hopes the Broken Arrow community and surrounding communities would be in a different place. However, in June, the Board of Directors made the difficult decision to cancel the festival due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in previous weeks. In an effort to preserve some portion of the festival and not have it completely canceled for the year, the committee felt they could proceed with the run, pageant, and cornhole tournament in a safe, socially distanced manner. They also felt it was important to uphold the commitment of giving away a $4,000 scholarship to a deserving student for the Miss Rooster Days Pageant.
“Canceling Oklahoma’s longest consecutively running festival was an incredibly difficult decision. We know how important this event is to the community. I was happy to see the committee willing to dig deep and find a way to preserve a few of our cherished traditions,” said Amber Hinkle, Events Manager for the Broken Arrow Chamber of Commerce.
