Since its doors opened on February 27, 2006, Clary Sage College has been helping students develop careers in a variety of fields. Programs are available for basic cosmetology, massage therapy, estheticians, nail technicians, master instructors and spa management. While students receive many hours of in-class education, their training is not just limited to the classroom. Clary Sage offers a variety of services for the public that extends beyond just haircuts, waxing and manicures.
Christen Brummett, master instructor and head of the Esthetics Department, says, “Our esthetician program deals with anything and everything related to skincare.” Students learn and perform on clients services such as hair removal, makeup application, facials, body treatments, waxing, electrotherapy, microdermabrasions, light therapy, false eyelashes, chemical peels and more. Clary Sage uses state-of-the-art technology to teach students the latest, most advanced techniques for every procedure. And now, with an increase in student enrollment, clients are needed more than ever for esthetics services.
Clary Sage’s aspiring estheticians undergo four weeks of intense classroom training before working in the clinic with their own clients. Students have the opportunity to very frequently practice many treatments on each other. “They can tell each other what feels good and what doesn’t, what works and what doesn’t,” Brummett adds. Detailed courses in the services themselves are taken by students, as well as courses in anatomy, physiology, skin diseases and disorders and product selection and ingredients. Instructors aim for each student to understand everything about skin and how to keep it healthy.
Six semi-private and two private rooms are available for esthetics use. Students take a holistic approach to providing the complete spa experience for clients. Soothing music is played in the serene environment and, as an added touch, all clients receive hand massages. Vitamins can be discussed for optimum skin health, while consultations help determine what products and services work best for clients’ skin. Brummett oversees all services performed on clients by students.
Esthetics students practice on eachother before working with clients.
“There are no other schools in this area that do the level of treatments with high-quality equipment and products as Clary Sage,” Brummett says. A microdermabrasion machine performs mechanical exfoliation on clients, forcing cells to turn over more quickly. The results and instant and dramatic. Clary Sage’s LED light is used for a variety of procedures. Its red and infrared light stimulates collagen production, calms the flushing caused by rosacea, minimizes scarring, helps wounds heal faster and more.
A licensed cosmetologist, Brummett worked as an esthetician after finishing cosmetology school. She obtained her instructor license and has since been with Clary Sage from the ground up. Brummett says she enjoys teaching students what she loves, as well as helping clients feel better about their appearances after they receive treatments. “I’ve been blessed to be a part of this industry,” she says. “I struggled with really bad acne growing up, so I can relate to some of our clients. It has been really rewarding to make people feel beautiful when they leave here.”
Clary Sage accommodates for clients’ various schedules by offering appointments both during the day and at night. Appointments are available Tuesday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5:45 to 9 p.m., as well as on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call (918) 298-8200 for more information or to book your services today.
