Owner Todd DeSmet washes Baxter with his sons Trent and Tyler at Budget Dog Wash.
The self-service dog wash – you may never have heard of such a thing, but Budget Dog Wash seems to be taking Tulsa and Broken Arrow by storm. Budget Dog Wash now has indoor self-service dog washes in two locations: 709 W. Houston in Broken Arrow (with Budget Car Wash) and at 6205 E. 91st St. in Tulsa. “Coming out and washing your dog with us is a budget-conscious way to have some family fun and save on grooming costs,” says owner Todd DeSmet. “And there’s no mess at home.”
For $7, dog washers get ten minutes and sixteen seconds of warm water, plus a wide selection of products including soap, shampoo, oatmeal shampoo (for dogs with dry skin), flea and tick shampoo, a de-skunk wash (for smelly dogs), conditioner, and a disinfectant for the tub. There’s a blow dryer, too. “Everything smells great, and it’s easy to use. It’s patterned after the car wash – you just turn the knob to get the different products,” says DeSmet.
DeSmet seems to have thought of everything. Each dog-washing bay is a private, gated suite, and the buildings are cooled in the summer and heated in the winter. Water is pre-set to a warm temperature. The sanitary stainless-steel tubs are waist-high, so you never have to stoop, and there’s a ramp for bigger dogs. There’s a collar clip in the tub to keep your pooch in place, and the floors are covered in slip-free tile. Treats are available for purchase to reward your faithful dog for his tolerance.
This sounds like such a great idea you may be wondering why nobody thought of it before. “I got the idea when I read that self-service dog washes were big in California, and since I already had the car wash in Broken Arrow, it just made sense to put one in there,” says DeSmet. “It’s really taken on a life of its own.” That was in the fall of 2008, and since then it’s been so popular that DeSmet opened a second Budget Dog Wash earlier this summer at 91st and Sheridan. And more locations all around town may be coming soon.
“Our locations are open 24 hours a day, every day. You can come out at your own convenience, and no appointments are necessary,” says DeSmet. “It’s a simple, fun and economical concept that will yield you a nice, clean dog.” Budget Dog Wash accepts credit cards, bills and quarters.
