A New Venture

Long-time sportscaster Mike Ziegenhorn takes on the insurance industry.

No longer in front of the camera but still in the spotlight, Mike Ziegenhorn is a community player in his new position at The Holmes Organisation, a Tulsa-based independent insurance company.

As an insurance agent and broker, Ziegenhorn specializes in life and health insurance. The job is a perfect fit for him, as he serves individuals, small businesses and corporations. Ziegenhorn’s experience as a sportscaster has given him the ability to never meet a stranger.

“Throughout my career I’ve met and worked with all kinds of people,” says Ziegenhorn. “One of the reasons I enjoy my work at Holmes is because I’m still working with the public and getting out and meeting new people in a different industry.”

A 1984 graduate of The University of Tulsa, Ziegenhorn has been a familiar face in the radio and broadcast industry for more than 25 years. He began his career at KRAV radio, reporting the news and handling sports coverage. Ziegenhorn first showed his talent at KRAV, highlighting facts and wrapping up the excitement of an athletic competition. He later spent time with KOED Channel 11 and KRMG radio before landing his long-time sports venture at KTUL Channel 8.

For 17 years, Ziegenhorn’s world revolved around any and all sports events. From national leagues to Friday night hometown heroes, “Zig” was reporting on the latest and greatest. “My schedule was a whirlwind of appointments, events and deadlines,” Ziegenhorn says. “My family and I became pros at squeezing in time together whenever we could.”

Ziegenhorn worked as an assignment manager at KTUL, overseeing more than 25 personnel. He anchored three sportscasts a day and was the executive producer for his popular weekly talk show, “You Make the Call.” In addition, he served as KTUL’s sports director for almost 10 years.

Ziegenhorn’s hard work and commitment to his job did not go unnoticed; he is a three-time Sportscaster of the Year award winner, which is given by the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters, referred to as OAB. Ziegenhorn was also rewarded twice by the OAB for having the state’s “best sports special.”

Today Ziegenhorn stays involved in sports by being the play-by-play announcer for The University of Tulsa’s football and basketball teams, as well as for local high school teams. He writes for High School Sports: The Magazine, a local, monthly publication, helps coach youth sports teams and runs area basketball tournaments. Ziegenhorn serves on the media committees for the local and state Health Underwriters Association. Despite everything he is involved in, he still says his life has slowed down since he began working for Holmes.

“My daily agenda is less stacked, less stressful, and I’m really enjoying it,” Ziegenhorn says. “I joined The Holmes Organisation because of its great reputation and local presence. I really respect the company. The support from my coworkers has been outstanding. They’ve been helpful in making my transition into the market a smooth one.”
