In 1985, when he was 17 years old, Brian Morris got into a motorcycle accident that broke his back. Doctors in San Francisco, where Brian is from, placed an experimental device in his spine. Though the surgeons in California did a great job treating the fracture that was obvious at the time with the technology that was available then, Brian lived in pain for many years after. He moved to Grove, Oklahoma in 1986, and a few years ago had the hardware removed from his back. Yet, the pain continued.
“I wouldn’t be able to move for a week. It started happening every year, then every six months, until finally every day. I was living in constant pain, and I thought it was just something I had to deal with. It would hit me like a ton of bricks, and I got to the point where I couldn’t walk, and it even affected control of my bladder. It was a searing pain down my side below the waist,” Brian explains. His doctor in Bernice, Oklahoma found a microscopic fracture in Brian’s back and contacted Dr. James Webb in Tulsa to perform surgery.
“Brian had been diagnosed with painful hardware and the hardware had been removed. However, I found that his pain was actually stemming from undiagnosed fractures,” explains Dr. Webb.
“When I met with Dr. Webb, he explained the operation to me thoroughly, but I didn’t really believe it would work. I was very skeptical and kept telling him the pain was in my lumbar – he was planning to operate up high. He basically said, ‘Let me do this and you will see.’”
Brian was absolutely amazed when he awoke from the surgery. “As soon as I woke up, Dr. Webb said I could go, and I got up and walked out. It was instantaneous relief. I thought they had shot me full of muscle relaxers to mask the pain! I just couldn’t believe it. Whatever Dr. Webb did was fantastic – it really worked. The procedure stopped the pain in its tracks.”
After years and years of X-rays and tests, the microscopic fractures had never been found until he visited Dr. Webb. “If I had this procedure done in the 80s, I wouldn’t be the same person I am now; I’d be a lot better off,” adds Brian.
Brian still has other issues stemming from his motorcycle accident, and Dr. Webb has other pain management plans for him. “I’ll do whatever Dr. Webb says. I trust him completely, and I’m so grateful for what he did. The surgery was a relatively painless procedure; I had a bandage for a few days, and when I took it off there was no bruising. It was like someone had just touched me and it was all better.”
