Gloria Pierce, owner of My Doll Castle in Claremore, displays her favorite little cowboy and cowgirl.
Breathtaking eyes, adorable button noses, pouty mouths, velvety soft skin – the dolls at My Doll Castle in Claremore are a far cry from your ordinary, store-bought playthings. Here the dolls are truly works of art. Store owner Gloria Pierce, who also co-owns Dave’s RV in Claremore with her husband, opened the enchanting doll kingdom in March. The store’s official grand opening celebration is April 19 and will include a drawing to win a free doll. The Claremore Chamber of Commerce will perform a ribbon cutting ceremony April 24.
Gloria discovered her passion for dolls by doing a favor for a friend, whom she offered to join on a 150-mile trip to a doll store. Gloria immediately fell in love with the stunning dolls on display, and she used her initial experience of awe to create her own store’s theme - “Discover the Joy and Magic.” Gloria explained, “Each doll was so exquisite and had a unique personality. They just really got to me - I couldn’t get these dolls out of my head.” The very first one she purchased was by artist Virginia Turner, whose dolls are a favorite of collectors because of their gorgeous, realistic eyes.
According to Gloria, My Doll Castle is the only authentic doll store of its kind in the Tulsa metropolitan area and offers a selection of more than 500 dolls from collections such as The Dollmaker and Friends, including Precious Moments and Key to My Heart dolls, Karito Kids and Zawieruszynski Originals. Popular doll makers available include Diane Bucki, Brynn Middleton, Joann Pohlman and Beverly Stoehr. “Many of the dolls are one-of-a-kind or limited edition; you simply won’t find such an exclusive selection anywhere near here,” said Gloria. Doll accessories such as clothes, doll stands and furniture are also on hand.
The inside of the store is designed to look like an actual rock castle, and there is a play area for the little ones. From the outside, the picturesque display window showcases dolls in a scene of blue skies, fluffy clouds, and green grass. My Doll Castle is attractive and seems to reflect the magical, blissful world of these beautiful dolls.
Gloria will soon be hosting a variety of events at the store, including a doll club for adults on Tuesday evenings, in which collectors may bring a doll to the store, meet other doll lovers and share stories. She also hopes to have once-a-month Sunday afternoon costume tea parties for children age four to 14, who will be invited to dress like their favorite doll, enjoy a treat, and have some fun.
If you’re interested in seeing all the dolls Gloria has to offer - including a magnificent bride, adorable redheaded frog twins, sweet gingerbread babies, funky reproductions of characters from the 1960’s, lifelike newborns, educational and ethnic dolls, and even one that breathes – stop by My Doll Castle at 407 W. Will Rogers Blvd. in Claremore. The store is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The dolls make wonderful gifts for anyone and range in price from about $20 to $800. Gloria offers an easy layaway plan so that everyone can afford to purchase at least one of these incredible dolls.
