You just never know where a zoology class may lead. For Drs. Dirk and Lanita Thomas, it led to marriage, kids, and two successful family practices in Dirk’s hometown of Owasso.

Dr. Lanita Thomas, a 1990  Broken Arrow High School graduate, and Dr. Dirk Thomas, a 1990 Owasso High School graduate, both attended Northeastern State University in Tahlequah and met in Zoology class. One day the professor offered a free dinner to the student who could make a perfect score on an exam. Lanita earned the dinner, invited Dirk to go along, and the two have been together ever since.

After finishing college, Lanita at NSU and Dirk at the University of Oklahoma, they made their home in Owasso, where Lanita opened her eye care practice in 2000. Dirk worked for a clinic in Tulsa until 2003, when he joined Lanita and opened his dental practice. Now the Thomas doctors can address all your eye care and dentistry needs in one place.

Dr. Lanita Thomas chose the eye care field because she was drawn to helping people and loved the positive environment. “When you are helping a child or perhaps an older patient and you can make their sight clear again, it’s a wonderful feeling.”  

Dr. Dirk Thomas said he was drawn to dentistry very early. “Dr. Hereford in Collinsville was my childhood dentist, and I remember being fascinated by all the little tools he used and the intricacies of dental work. It turned out to be as much fun as I thought, and I love it to this day.”

Both doctors say they enjoy the balance between work and family time that their careers allow. The Thomases have three young children, and their practice is very family-friendly. Dr. Dirk Thomas said it is important to them to become acquainted with their patients so they can give them the best care possible. “We really get to know our patients and develop relationships with them. We call in the evenings to check on them and are always available for emergency care.”

Dr. Lanita Thomas said in both the eye care and the dental practice, the goal is to please the patients and exceed their expectations. “We don’t get in a rush on our eye or dental exams. We provide a quality exam and help you choose the right dental services or, in my case, the right pair of frames, sunglasses and accessories. It’s more important to do things correctly than to be out the door in record time.”  

Thomas Dental Care specializes in cosmetic dentistry and offers family dentistry, preventative care, and crowns and bridges. Their top of the line equipment will keep patients comfortable, and the television screens available at each station (even on the ceiling) play the patients’ choice of movie. “It’s a nice way to relax and unwind,” said Cary Cook, new patient coordinator.

On the Thomas Eye Care side, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into a specialty frame boutique. There are hundreds of frames to choose from, including top brands such as Oakley’s, Maui Jim’s, Juicy, Wiley X and Gucci. “We have the largest selection of high-end frames in this area. We take the time to fit your frames and then order them from the specialists at the lab,” explains Dr. Lanita Thomas.

While each doctor in this married team has a different specialty, they agree on the ultimate objective. “We provide a perfect blend of function and beauty in both our eye care and dentistry services,” said Dr. Dirk Thomas.
