Broken Arrow City Manager Michael Spurgeon has been awarded the 2024 Presidents’ Award for Community Service, one of the highest honors Northeastern State University and the NSU Alumni Association bestows.

NSU’s 100th Annual Homecoming Celebration

Spurgeon, who has been with the City of Broken Arrow for nine years, was officially honored on Oct. 25, during NSU’s 100th Annual Homecoming Celebration.

“With great pride, we celebrate your service and commitment to the State of Oklahoma and the City of Broken Arrow in your role as City Manager and your work to elevate the profile of Northeastern State University among the citizens of Broken Arrow,” said NSU President Rodney S. Hanley, Ph.D.

The university also recognized Spurgeon’s work with City, NSU officials, and the Regional University System of the Oklahoma Board of Regents collaborating on innovative projects to increase the number of students attending the NSU-BA campus. He was also influential in establishing a partnership between the City of Broken Arrow and NSU, that will allow parking on campus during Sunset Amphitheater events.

"I am humbled and honored to receive the 2024 Presidents' Award for Community Service and to be included in Northeastern State University's 100th Annual Homecoming Celebration," Spurgeon said. "I share this recognition with Mayor Debra Wimpee, the Broken Arrow City Council, and all the hardworking city employees, as it wouldn't be possible without their support. Likewise, NSU is an important partner in the Broken Arrow community, and working with Dr. Hanley and his team has been a privilege. The best thing is our partnership is just getting started!"
