The smiling faces you’ll encounter at Buddy’s Grill in Claremore include (L to R): Nickia Barbee, Jared Frost, Joannie Kunningas, Buddy Robertson and Lyslie Lewellen.
“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” This famous line from Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” simply means that it doesn’t really matter what something is called. What really matters is its true essence, what it really is. Sometimes, however, names and words can be misleading. That is why Buddy Robertson decided to change the name of his restaurant from “The Pits” to “Buddy’s Grill.”
“This new name better reflects what we serve,” Buddy says. “While we have always served barbeque, we want people to know we have a whole menu of other types of food.” In fact, the restaurant is well known for its excellent barbeque, voted “Reader’s Choice for Best Barbeque” twice in recent years by Claremore Daily Progress readers. But as time has gone on, Buddy has added more and more to the menu, which can be described most aptly as containing a whole array of American food. In fact, much of the menu could be called “Southern comfort food.”
The daily specials are reflective of this fact. Monday’s special, for instance, includes beans and cornbread with fried potatoes and onions. Other specials of the week include Tuesday’s homemade chicken and noodles, Wednesday’s spaghetti and meat sauce, Thursday’s meatloaf, and Friday’s old-fashioned roast beef sandwich. What could be more comforting than these choices?
No matter what is served, Buddy Robertson has personally overseen its preparation. Buddy has spent decades in the restaurant business. For years, he travelled opening restaurants for The Black Eyed Pea Restaurant chain before opening a restaurant in Claremore 16 years ago. Over those years, he has used his culinary expertise and creativity to build a delectable menu that matches his taste and exacting standards.
“Fresh” is the operative word in Buddy’s kitchen. “We make our own nachos every day, and cut our French fries fresh each day as well – we never make frozen fries,” says Buddy. “In fact, we try to use as little pre-frozen food as possible in preparation.” At Buddy’s Grill, chicken fried steak, fried chicken, and fried jalapeno pickles are just a few of the things that are hand battered and cooked up fresh to order.
Buddy’s menu also offers many fresh and grilled choices, like grilled chicken, pork chops, and ham steak. For a light meal, one would want to check out the soup and salad menu, which includes traditional salads as well as tossed pecan salad and the soup of the day. Several sandwiches grace the menu, including chicken, chicken fried steak, club, French dip, barbeque, and of course, hamburgers. “We’ve been told several times we have the best hamburger in town,” Buddy adds. For those in the mood to eat at home, Buddy’s Grill offers its menu to go, and sells barbeque meat by the pound.
