Seniors enjoy programs that empower, enlighten, engage and enrich their lives at the BA Senior Center.
Empower, enlighten, engage, enrich. These are the words that describe the impact on the lives of those 55 plus at the Broken Arrow Senior Center. During National Senior Center month in September, the Broken Arrow Senior Center is celebrating the fact that they are a vital community resource by spotlighting how the Center helps local residents become “masters of aging”.
Throughout the month, the Center has planned special activities for their members to celebrate National Senior Center Month including a free document shredding day, vision screenings, and Medicare 101 and veteran benefit seminars. Members will also have a chance to look over a Micro-Sprint racecar for an afternoon! These offerings are in addition to the more than 50 activities and events offered each month.
When someone says “senior center” images of bingo may be the first thing to come to mind, but today’s senior center is so much more. “From Yoga to Line Dancing and Creative Writing to health seminars, the Broken Arrow Senior Center is a gem in the growing landscape of our community’s downtown,” notes June Ross Executive Director. “Our members find friendship, meaning and purpose and our growing membership is indicative of the life-changing benefits the Center offers. The bottom line? We help people master aging!”
Can aging be mastered? If you talk to any of the people that enter the doors of the Broken Arrow Senior Center each day, the answer is a resounding “yes!”
Larry and his wife Sandra are a good example. The couple was searching for something to help them navigate the life changes looming ahead of them. Like so many, Larry and Sandra went from worker to retiree, from being middle-aged to being older.
“The Broken Arrow Senior Center, we discovered, offered a broad range of activities and programming for both of us,” recalls Larry. “We joined immediately. At less than 6 cents per day per membership, it can’t be beat.” They have been members now for more than five years.
