Gardening fever has grown to epidemic proportions! People everywhere are experiencing the symptoms, including endless browsing in garden centers and nurseries, dragging out and cleaning off shovels and rakes, and endlessly checking soil temperatures. Don’t worry though; a cure is right around the corner. Stave off your case of gardening fever with a trip to the Owasso Bouquet of Gardeners’ annual Spring Garden Festival. Scheduled for Saturday, April 30 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Owasso’s Tyann Plaza, this year’s event will put everyone in the mood for the upcoming planting season and warmer temperatures.
This is the seventh year for the festival, and organizers are excited to offer more booths and a wider selection of items than any years past. Chair person of the event, Phoebe Cole, explains that the committee has been working hard for the past five months. “We do a lot of preparation each year in order to make our festival the best in the area,” she explains. “We attend other local events and pursue the best of the best vendors we can find.” Several of the businesses that were involved last year are back again, and those in attendance will be thrilled to note that the Amish Bakery from Choteau will once again be there. “They are one of our most asked for vendors,” laughs Phoebe. “They always bring delicious pastries, baked goods and more. They are very popular.”
The group has already secured a vendor from Coffeyville that specializes in yard art and iron art, and representatives from Jenks, Wagoner and other area communities will bring bird houses, gazing balls and more. Worley’s Nursery will offer a huge selection of perennials, annuals and vegetables for you to take home and place immediately into your own garden or flower bed.
For those who are not sure which plants to purchase for their particular landscape layout, several Oklahoma State University Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer all of your horticultural questions. If you have an unknown plant or tree growing on your property, this is also the perfect time to bring a cutting to the Master Gardeners. They will be able to identify it for you and advise you on the plant’s care and upkeep. The Owasso Bouquet of Gardeners is proud to say that they have a dozen Master Gardeners as members of their club.
Admission to the festival is free, but the Owasso Bouquet of Gardeners graciously accepts donations. The club is proud to support Owasso’s youth by offering a scholarship each year to a deserving member of the senior class. This year’s recipient will receive $800 to put towards their upcoming college expenses.
The gardening group has long been active in the Owasso community. “We have several flower beds that we maintain throughout the area,” says Carolyn Mason, second-year president of the club. “Our most visible are the plants located in front of the Owasso Public Library, but there are many others too.”
The group welcomes additional club members who have an interest in this hobby. Currently, they boast a roster of 26 members, and they are always excited to add more. From humble beginnings in February, 1998, when they had four members, they have grown tremendously. In fact, two of the original members still enthusiastically participate in the group’s many worthy causes.
Phoebe Cole adds that the festival will go on, rain or shine. “Each year, inclement weather is a concern. However, we usually are able to continue with the fun anyway.”
If you have a product or service that would be a good fit with the Spring Garden Festival, Phoebe says they are always looking to add more businesses to the event. You can contact her at (918) 376-2056 for additional information and space availability.
Now is the time to get your gardening fever cured, so make plans to attend the Owasso Bouquet of Gardeners’ Spring Garden Festival. It is the perfect therapy for you and your green thumb!
