Eufaula’s Whole Hawg Days Festival celebrates its 28th season July 26-28.

Do you want to take a summer vacation, but just can’t afford a big trip somewhere far away? Consider a “staycation” in Eufaula, Oklahoma the last weekend in July. A carnival, rodeo, crafts for kids, parade, poker run on Lake Eufaula, car show, arts and crafts, barbecue cook-off and sandwich giveaway are just a few of the festivities featured at the annual Whole Hawg Days Festival in Eufaula, July 26-28. Admission is free, and organizers say there truly is something for the entire family to enjoy.
The reason for the birth of the festival 28 years ago is the Whole Hawg Days BBQ competition, according to Jimmie Phelan, executive director of Eufaula Area Chamber of Commerce. “This is a great way to prove just how good you can really cook that barbecue,” she said.
The cook-off is set for Saturday, July 28, with judging beginning at 3 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded, and the public is invited to sample all of the competitors’ cooking for free, Phelan said.
At 7 on Saturday morning, the Poker Run begins at Eufaula Cove Marina, with participants hailing from several states to compete for 1st place, and as much as $45,000 in prize money will be given away, Phelan said. Outlying marinas participating in the event include Cole’s Evergreen, No. 9, Belle Starr, and Eufaula Cove Marina as the host site.
