Granparent Toolkit and Training Available

Maternal & Child Health Service Has Made New Training Available

By: Ira Farley | Category: Special Interest | Issue: September 2024

Maternal Child Health has created a new Grandparent Toolkit. CHD Health Educators and Community Health Workers play a pivotal role in communities across the state touching the lives of people in many ways including, economically, educationally, mentally, socially, spiritually, and relationally. More so, grandparents play unique and special roles in the lives of their grandchildren. In Oklahoma there are approximately 961,000 children from newborns to 18-year-olds with 42,383 grandparents raising approximately 90,000 of these children. (That is 9% of grandparents)

Free Toolkit: "Grandparenting"

The free toolkit, "Grandparenting," is available as self-study or as a group setting. The course takes approximately nine hours to complete all seven topics. The Self-Study version of the course includes pre-recorded presentations, videos, and handouts, while the Group Study version includes PowerPoint presentations with presenter notes, videos, and handouts.

The Maternal Child Health Service developed the toolkits for grandparents who help take care of their grandchildren from birth to 18 years. Whether you are living with grandchildren or just watching them a few days per week, the kit will help increase your confidence and knowledge about topics including:

  • Infant Care & Safety
  • Nutrition
  • Discipline & Guidance
  • School Connectedness
  • Adolescent Development
  • Mental Health
  • Respite Care or short-term services that provide substitute caregiving
