Dr. Melita Tate and Dr. Kris Lepere offer a no-insurance and no-government clinic that provides affordable primary care healthcare for the uninsured, underinsured, people with high deductibles, and those who just want to see a doctor without a long wait.

It’s plain and simple taking care of patients. No insurance and no Medicare – just grassroots healthcare. This clinic of the same name, located at 6530 E. 91st St., features an all-new concept that’s the first of its kind in Tulsa.
Kris Lepere, D.O., and Melita Tate, M.D., came up with the idea after years of working together at a local urgent care clinic. They decided to return to primary care because of the high stress, high acuity work associated with urgent care.
Both doctors had colleagues in other states who had started what are known as third party free practices. By cutting out insurance companies and the government, they could concentrate on what they wanted to do – help patients. And they saved the patients money from reduced overhead.
That’s exactly what Dr. Lepere and Dr. Tate are doing at Grassroots Healthcare, which opened in May. People who are uninsured, underinsured, or pay high deductibles can get sick visits, procedures, basic lab tests or X-rays for less than half the cost of traditional facilities. They focus on the needs of their patients rather than the needs of insurance companies and
the government, lowering the cost of healthcare.
“This really makes everything much less complicated,” says Dr. Tate. “It’s a lot less scary for people without insurance, independent contractors and small business owners who can’t afford medical care for their employees.” No one needs to go without medical attention.
Patients can call for an appointment and receive care the same day. Even walk-ins can be worked into the schedule in most instances. Both doctors are double board certified in
the fields of internal medicine and pediatrics, so they can provide primary care for both adults and children. If a condition is out of their primary care range, they can refer patients to specialists.
The cost for all services and procedures is literally up front, posted in the main entrance. There is no additional billing and no hidden costs. Whether treating a simple cold or a chronic illness such as diabetes or hypertension, they can provide the one-on-one care that patients need.
“I want to be the country doctor in the city,” says Dr. Lepere, who, like Dr. Tate, is a native Oklahoman. “I want to get to know patients by name, know their families and where they work. If they have a question about their health, they can just call me.”
Besides the doctors, the Grassroots staff consists of a receptionist and a medical assistant, who, Monday through Friday, also serves as an interpreter for Spanish-speaking patients. Those with health insurance who want to submit a claim as an out of network provider can get a simple printout for their own use.
At last, there are doctors in Tulsa who are tired of the bloated cost of healthcare, and they have done something about it. Grassroots Healthcare is located at 6530 E. 91st St., in the retail center behind The Hamlet. They are convenient to Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Bixby and Jenks. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Call for questions or an appointment at (918) 878-7733.
