Legacy Equine Centre has recently opened its doors as the newest, state-of-the-art hospital for horses in northeastern Oklahoma. The facility will primarily serve the areas of northeastern Oklahoma, southwestern Missouri, Arkansas and southern Kansas. However, with the reputations and experience of Dr. Matt Klotz and Dr. Wade Spradley, co-owners of the new equine hospital, patients will be drawn from around the country.

Dr. Klotz, alumnus of Oklahoma State University, obtained his bachelor’s degree in physiology in 1992 and his doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1996. His career in veterinary medicine includes nine years as the staff surgeon for a surgery referral practice. He has performed numerous emergency surgeries, including colic and Caesarian sections. Dr. Klotz also specializes in elective surgeries, including arthroscopy, the correction of angular and flexural limb deformations in foals, as well as internal fixation of fractures. He has completed the basic and advanced courses in fracture repair from the Association for the Study of Internal Fixation. Peers recognize Dr. Klotz across the country for his ability to produce outstanding radiographic and ultrasound images. Today, his primary practice interests are sports medicine, lameness of performance horses and diagnostic imaging.

Dr. Spradley, also an Oklahoma State University alumnus, obtained his doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1985. He has experience working for practitioners across the United States, including Arkansas, Kentucky, New Orleans, as well as at two Thoroughbred racetracks. Dr. Spradley owned a lameness practice in Houston, Texas, before returning to Oklahoma in 1995. He worked three years at a surgery referral practice and has spent the past seven years as a solo practitioner. His equine medicine interests today focus on lameness, surgery and ophthalmology. Both Dr. Spradley and Dr. Klotz are active members of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Association, as well as the International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology.

Legacy Equine Centre provides arthroscopy surgery, full diagnostic, surgical and hospital care, as well as shockwave therapy for tendons and ligaments. Digital ultrasound and digital X-ray services are also available.

A padded recovery stall allows horses to have ultimate protection during the administration and recovery from anesthesia. Horses are moved to and from the operating room on a modern ceiling hoist system. Surgical procedures may be viewed from a second floor balcony through a clear, Plexiglas window.

Legacy Equine Centre uses up-to-date equipment and procedures to give their best care to patients. Eklin digital X-ray equipment, considered to be top-notch in the industry, is among the equipment used by Dr. Spradley and Dr. Klotz. In addition, the Olympus video endoscope captures and records digital images to be placed on the patient’s file. An EnVisor ultrasound device is also on hand in the office, having the capability to record ultrasound readings from the chest cavity, including the heart, lungs, liver and kidney. It is an aid in evaluating colic problems and can pinpoint segments of affected intestine, allowing doctors to determine whether or not surgery is recommended.

While surgery and lameness are specialties of the hospital, Legacy Equine Centre is equipped and experienced for most equine needs. Call (918) 827-7300 for an appointment or for more information.
