Two Lewis sons, Matt and Bryan, are in the family business at A-1 Auto Body with their dad, Dave Lewis.
A-1 Auto Body is family owned by Dave and Sally Lewis. The landmark Broken Arrow collision repair center first occupied 5,000 square feet in back of the OTASCO store at 71st & Elm, where they successfully operated their start-up business. Dave purchased property at 822 N. Elm and built a new building, where A-1 operated until 2003. The business was literally bursting at the seams, with no room to expand. Dave made the decision to move to a new location in which they could expand and grow the business.
Doors opened in 2003 to the new 24,000-square-foot facility at 2012 N. Aspen. Dave remembers saying, “What in the world are we going to do with all this space?” They had more than tripled their square footage from the previous location.
If you’ve never visited A-1 Auto Body on North Aspen, you need to. Dave invites area residents to stop by any time for a soft drink, a tour of the facility, and an opportunity to walk through his unique and attractive showroom full of antiques and collectibles. No, they are not for sale. They’re part of Dave’s personal collection, and you’ll see items including a rare, mint condition three-wheeled BMW Isetta automobile, a Cushman Eagle Motor Scooter, a very old school desk, radios, record players, children’s pedal cars, replica Whizzer Motorbikes, bicycles, kit motorcycles, and more.
A-1 Auto Body is known for top-notch collision repair work, but they do much more than the name implies. The shop has the latest state-of-the-art equipment, is a first-class auto repair facility, and does business for virtually all auto insurance companies. They are extremely customer friendly and enjoy showing off their showroom. Two of the four Lewis boys, Matt and Bryan, are employed in the family business. Bryan runs his own Klean Kar Auto Detail Shop at A-1.
Larry McCarty is one of the talented body techs at A-1 Auto Body.
A-1 Auto Body replaces auto glass, does window tinting, provides paintless dent repairs, and offers truck after-market items including spray-in and drop-in bedliners. They apply rust preventive undercoating, have an upholstery shop, and do custom paintwork on automobiles, motorcycles and boats. They provide hail repair, plus repair damages caused by snow, ice or road hazards.
Modern downdraft paint booths and baking booths help bring vehicles back to factory specs in short order. The repair shop utilizes a Pro-Spot welder that duplicates spot welds to factory specs. After Desert Storm, A-1 Auto Body contracted to repaint military Hum-Vs for the government.
The Lewis family is also very civic-minded and have spearheaded projects including restoring and painting a vehicle to be auctioned off with all proceeds going to Ronald McDonald House. They have also conducted food drives for BA Neighbors. A local military man serving in Iraq owned a beautifully restored automobile that was badly damaged in an Oklahoma storm while he was serving. Dave and A-1 Auto Body caught wind of the disaster, brought the car to their location, donated $8,000 in labor and parts, and had the vehicle restored and ready when the soldier returned from his tour of duty in Iraq.
A-1 Auto Body will arrange for your vehicle to be towed to their shop if necessary, and a shuttle service is provided for customers who need a ride to and from the shop. Dave believes that quality service is a great way for them to show their appreciation to their valued customers. Contact A-1 the next time your vehicle needs repairs, or stop by any day for a free beverage and a tour. Hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (Thursdays to 7 p.m.)
