Owner Hazel Ward shows off some of the delicious fudge available at The Nut House.
Those who pass over the Arkansas Navigation Bridge have grown accustomed to the sight of what has become a favorite fixture on historic Route 66. Now, the home of top-quality nuts, candies and gourmet food enhancements has recently added a new service to make it even more inviting. In August, The Nut House opened their onsite deli, Hot Mama’s Deli, where one can purchase sandwiches made specifically to order from fine meats like Boars Head and specialty Amish cheeses.
Hazel Ward, owner of The Nut House, is excited about this new addition to the business. She points out that The Nut House has always been a popular place for locals and travelers alike to purchase gifts, and traffic has been heavy at certain times of the year. With lunches made on the spot and also available to be catered to businesses at the lunch hour, Hazel expects this will increase traffic year round.
The Nut House was established 40 years ago, and at that time sold only native pecans, which were plentiful in the region. The house itself is a log cabin, constructed of pecan logs, and was moved from its original spot on a farm to its current location. Originally, the house was used for the pecan cracking operation, and custom pecan cracking is still available. However, The Nut House is now a display for many other kinds of nuts, prepared in a myriad of ways: plain, salted, dry roasted, honey roasted, cinnamon spiced, mixed, chocolate or toffee covered.
The Nut House does not stop at nuts. Other delectable treats abound to tempt your palette, including candied fruits and a collection of fudges that must be tried to be truly appreciated. Flavors include everything from the standard chocolate to peanut butter to orange cream, which Hazel aptly describes as tasting “like a Dreamsicle.” Hazel also notes that The Nut House is always adding new flavors of fudge. “We have so many flavors to offer that we
For your morning toast or English muffin, The Nut House features a line of gourmet jellies, jams and fruit butters that could possibly spoil you against grocery store brands. “From berries to fruits, you won’t find a better jelly anywhere,” says Hazel. What if you cannot have sugar? Not to worry. The Nut House features a whole line of sugar free or no sugar added products as well.
The Nut House doesn’t just offer the best sweets – you can find some of the best spices and sauces to flavor the main course long before dessert will grace the table. Just some of the seasonings include barbeque – regular, spicy, and hot – rosemary, and herbs, which is popular for chicken. The shelves at The Nut House feature all types of specialty foods, like hot and sweet jalapeno peppers, sweet pepper glaze, aged balsamic chipotle glaze, garlic seasoned dipping oil, and apple cider sauce. The Nut House features different brands of locally-grown honey, as well as a variety of pickles in all flavors. “We carry a couple of brands of pickles that customers come in regularly to buy,” Hazel says. “They are just that good.”
With the new deli and the established line of food products, one might assume that The Nut House is only about food. Many other gift products are available, however, and one has to visit The Nut House to see what Hazel has recently found at market. “I like to find unique products,” she says. “I like people to find things here they won’t find anywhere else.”
