Dr. Ronald LaButti is ready to help patients start living again.
Barbara Tenney kept telling herself she had probably “just pulled something.” Despite the nagging pain that had persisted in her right hip for years, she did all she could to ignore it.
When Tenney experienced a heart attack in July 2003, her dysfunctional right hip was screaming for attention. “Following the heart attack, I was required to do physical rehabilitation exercises on the treadmill and bike,” she says. “To me, the most difficult part about these activities was the extreme pain in my right hip. I knew that wasn’t normal.”
However, once again, Tenney did all she could to put the bothersome right hip out of her mind. “I guess I just didn’t want to face facts,” she says. “I was afraid it would slow me down.”
The pesky hip eventually became impossible to ignore. “It had gotten to where my range of motion was close to nil, and I had trouble doing simple things like crossing my legs,” she says. Tenney finally approached her son-in-law, a doctor, for advice in January 2005. An X-ray conclusively determined that her right hip was indeed badly deteriorated.
“Around the time I had the heart attack, I remembered my cardiologist had recently had hip replacement surgery,” Tenney says. “I figured what was good enough for my heart doctor was good enough for me.” This inquiry led her to another physician who eventually had a profound effect on her health and well-being. Her cardiologist recommended Ronald S. LaButti, D.O, an orthopedic surgeon at Central States Orthopedic Specialists, Inc.
Dr. LaButti made no bones about it. He quickly determined that Tenney’s right hip was in bad shape. In fact, tests revealed her right hip was 90 percent deteriorated. Hip replacement surgery was performed on June 30, 2005, and the beginning of Tenney’s new and pain-free life began.
“The surgery went just fine,” Tenney says. “I never would have put it off so long if I’d known how easy it would be.” It didn’t take her long to get back into the swing of things. In fact, by that December, she was playing golf in Hawaii.
It has been over two years since Tenney’s hip replacement surgery and, with each passing day, she is thankful to Dr. LaButti for restoring her active lifestyle. Not only is she able to play golf again, but she can also do all the things she wants with her daughter and grandchild.
“I cannot imagine living in another day and time when hip and knee replacement surgery was not around,” Tenney says. “I just don’t know how people who lived before us and needed this surgery managed without it. I feel very fortunate to be enjoying my life to the fullest. I feel it is truly the greatest surgery ever.”
