After “The Outsiders” Broadway cast spoke to members of the Will Rogers College MS/HS drama classes, the actors worked with principal Cindy Largent-Williams to create a special event for the students. The musical is based on “The Outsiders” book by S.E. Hinton, a 1966 graduate of Will Rogers High School. It was published when she was a student there.
Based on essays submitted for review, six girls and two boys were chosen to attend the event. All the students needed was the funding to travel to and stay in New York City’s Theatre District.
Largent-Williams brought the idea to The Will Rogers HS Community Foundation to provide a grant for the trip. The Ron and Carole Woods Foundation donated $5,000. Another generous donation was given by the son of Kathy Williams Caswell, Class of 1962, in her honor. Dick Risk, former chair of the foundation, agreed to pay for the show tickets through the Will Rogers Stage Foundation which supports the arts at Rogers. So far, the foundation and other contributors have raised $11,500. just $1,000 short of their goal.
“For many of these students, this trip is the first time out of the state and on an airplane,” Largent-Williams said. “Because the play’s roots are here in the hallways at Will Rogers, seeing ‘The Outsiders’ on Broadway will be a transformational experience.”
The trip is planned for May 3-5. The group is still accepting donations to fund the remainder of the trip at https://willrogersfoundation.net/
