Superwrench Import Auto Specialists has served Tulsans and their import automobiles for 30 years. The company has been at its current location near 61st Street and Garnett for the past 20 of those years. Owner Kevin Medlin says the business specializes in servicing import automobiles from Japanese and Asian manufacturers.

Medlin proudly states, “All of our technicians are trained, factory-certified Master Techs.” The certified Master Techs perform all of Superwrench’s services, whether routine oil changes or diagnosing problems. From the most basic services to more complex issues, your car will be handled by professionals at Superwrench.

Although recommended maintenance periods have been extended over the years by automobile manufacturers, Medlin says the basic principle is the same. Vehicles need to be serviced in a timely manner in accordance to climate conditions and the type of driving done.

“Fluids are the lifeblood of any automobile,” says Medlin. “One of the most basic is oil. It really doesn’t matter what the recommended oil change interval may be, but when oil starts breaking down, it can soften seals and have other damaging effects on the vehicle’s engine.” As a basic guideline, Superwrench recommends that engine oil be changed every 3,000 miles.

According to Medlin, oils receive many additives during refinement to enhance their function. Additives include viscosity enhancers, detergents, surfactants and chemicals to catch any dirt, grit and grime that can build up in the engine’s crankcase.

If engine oil is not properly maintained, it will lose its ability to keep out foreign particles, therefore allowing them to move throughout the engine instead of being flushed out when the oil is changed. The same general rule can be applied to other automotive fluids. If fluids such as brake fluid and antifreeze are properly maintained, the automobile will have a longer, more dependable life.

Although Superwrench’s recommended oil change interval is every 3,000 miles, it may be extended to 7,500 miles by the use of a synthetic oil product. Medlin reminds us that synthetic oils are actually not synthetic at all. The base product is still refined oil, but it is of a much higher grade than what is used in regular engine oil products. Synthetic oils receive additional additives to enhance oil performance and delay the breaking down process. Although synthetic oils cost more, the extended maintenance period allows costs to be about the same as with standard oil products.

Kevin Medlin encourages automobile owners to schedule vehicles for periodic maintenance. This includes oil and filter changes, engine oil system flushes, tire inspection and rotation, brake inspection and service, fuel system maintenance, battery service, cooling system conditioner and basic vehicle maintenance inspections. “Do this, and your vehicle will provide you with many years of satisfaction,” says Medlin.
