What to Know About Surrendering or Adopting a Pet

When we add a new pet to our family the goal and hope is to care for them and love them until they cross the rainbow bridge. But sometimes things out of our control happen, such as a loss of a job, a pandemic, a new child who has severe allergies, or the new pet doesn’t get along with the children, and we have to find a new home for the pet. Read below to learn how to surrender a pet, but also how to adopt if you’re ready to add to your family.

How to Surrender

Because it is illegal to dump any live animal in a public space with the intent of abandoning, many organizations have set up programs for people to surrender their pet they can no longer care for or people who have found a pet and can’t locate the owner. Some of these organizations are Tulsa SPCA, City of Tulsa Animal Welfare, and Humane Society of Tulsa. All of these organizations do require an appointment to surrender. They will not accept walk-ins. The approval to surrender is also dependent upon available space, their ability to treat the animal’s medical issues, and the behavior of the animal. Your local animal control may also allow surrendering, but most are not a “no-kill shelter,” therefore animals may be euthanized.

How to Adopt

You can also adopt a pet through the organizations mentioned above. All of their available pets can be viewed online through their website where you can learn about their breed, age, dietary needs, medical issues, and whether or not they do well with other pets and kids. If you find a pet you’re interested in you can fill out an online application where a staff member will review it and then contact you about adoption. Adoption fees vary depending on the age of the animal and species. Some of the organizations have special pricing for seniors, animals with medical issues, and animals who have been in their care for over six months.
